The family can exert a strong influence on children's diet and eating behaviors, which, in turn, may have an impact on their weight status. Since the dawn of time, the dining table has been the nexus of family interaction. The simple act of sharing meals solidifies the family identity and family ties by modeling a wide range of learned behavioural patterns. One of the groups most affected in this respect are adolescents.

Researchers have shown that family meals are associated with improved dietary intake. A higher frequency of family meals is associated with a greater intake of fruits, vegetables, grains and calcium-rich products, and negatively associated with consumption of fried foods and soft drinks. Family meals have also been shown to contribute to the development of regular eating habits and positive psychosocial functioning and to improvements in language and literacy. In addition, family meals have been associated with reduced risk-taking behaviours such as smoking and alcohol and drug use, as well as better school performance.

Because of the multiple benefits of eating meals together as a family, promoting the family meal is a powerful public health measure for improving dietary quality, reducing the incidence of weight problems and improving educational and social outcomes.

The family is the ideal environment for child development. In the opinion of the American Academy of Pediatrics, children receive a better education when they live with parents who are fully committed in their love for them, and who respect and support each other, have sufficient financial and social resources and are actively involved in the education of their children. Rapid social changes are putting this fundamental role of the family at risk.

Legislation has recently been passed to regulate the legal authority of two adults of the same sex to adopt a child. In this report, the authors study the literature referring to adoption by same-sex couples. A critical review revealed that there are few published studies, and that many of them involve highly questionable methodologies: small number of children in the sample, the selected families were not representative of the general population, a comparison with the standard family model was not carried out, the follow-up period was, in general, short and the assessment was based mainly on questionnaires. The only study performed in Spain involves 28 families in which only 14 minors lived with two adults of the same sex. The study included only children under 16 years of age.

In view of these considerations, it would not appear to be reasonable to establish firm conclusions supporting the "goodness" of the bond between people of the same sex as the ideal setting for the growth and development of a child.

Going to grandparents' house is a common experience for many children. However, recent research indicates that increasing number of children are visiting grandparents not only for holidays, but to live and be raised by grandparents. A wide variety of social changes have contributed in having children raised by grandparents. Frequently a traumatic event in the parents' family is the trigger for grandparents to take over the role of surrogate parents. Despite the numerous backgrounds problems and risk factors of children being raised by grandparents show a better health than children that live in foster homes.

Although some grandparents are the guardians of their grandchildren, a much more common arrangement is that of grandparents providing help to the parents in the care of the children. Grandparents that talk, monitor, and act as a safety model for grandchildren may help protect them from known health risk factors. Research indicates that grandparents are doing a good job of providing care their grandchildren. They are a safety net for all the family.
