Resumen_ingles
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that continues to cause considerable childhood morbidity and mortality both in developing and developed countries. In Spain, it can be considered a resurgent disease, linked to the new lifestyles: travel to endemic regions, the high rate of immigration from areas of high prevalence, long-term survival of patients who are at high risk for developing tuberculosis (those with congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies), etc.
The pediatric population often acts as a «sentinel» for tuberculosis infection or disease in a family, a group of school children, etc. Thus, it is important for pediatricians to be familiar with the typical and atypical presentations of this disease. In addition, they must maintain a high index of suspicion for its development in order to initiate the proper diagnostic testing and treatment immediately, while studying the possible contacts for the purpose of interrupting the spread of the disease before it can reach epidemic proportions. The purpose of this report is to review the subject and describe a case of severe cavitary tuberculosis in an adolescent.
