Nail growth disorders have been associated with a great number of local or systemic diseases and drug exposure. It may result in a wide range of nail changes, from transverse grooves on the nail plate (Beau's lines) to complete nail shedding (onychomadesis). Onychomadesis in children is a rare condition, and it may be a concern among patient's family and caregivers. The association of onychomadesis and Beau's lines and infectious diseases, particularly hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), has been reported previously. The presence of mild forms and specially the time that has passed from the viral disease and the nail shedding, make one suspect of an under diagnosis of this entity. Pediatricians should start to consider onychomadesis as a possible complication in the course of viral infections as common as the ones that occur during childhood as HFMD. We present three patients in whom a mild viral infection was the most probable triggering factor of onychomadesis. In each case, the nail changes resolved spontaneously in the course of some weeks.
